NetPerformer Case Study:
A Platform For Profit Growth
Memotec NetPerformer® provides flexible, cost-effective satellite communications for offshore oil rigs and broadens the marketplace for a Memotec reseller.
The Opportunity
Network Products Leasing of Lafayette, Louisiana installs and maintains wireless telecommunications network solutions throughout the U.S. Gulf Coast region. Many of its customers are drilling companies that operate offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, where they face special challenges maintaining reliable and cost-effective voice and data communications.
Sam Romero, President and founder of Network Products Leasing, has been working with the offshore drilling industry for nearly two decades. "The offshore environment is challenging enough just because of the physical conditions," he said. "Equipment can easily get knocked around on an oil rig, and saltwater is hard on anything electronic. But the big factor is cost. It's expensive to operate a network out there."
Although earlier microwave systems have been overtaken by cheaper satellite-based solutions, bandwidth is still costly, as is leasing space for subsidiary networking equipment on platforms throughout the Gulf. In addition, the cost of servicing equipment installations is elevated by the expense of helicopter transportation from shore as well as, security concerns that may limit access to platforms, requiring maximum flexibility from solutions providers when scheduling maintenance visits.
"To win business-and to keep it-you have to offer a competitive combination of low cost, fast turnaround, absolute reliability, and great service," said Romero. "You have to use any advantage you can find."
The Solution
Network Product Leasing has been selling a Memotec NetPerformer-based solution that enables offshore platforms to upgrade their existing communications infrastructure to an efficient, satellite-based VoIP system that provides high-quality voice and data transmissions. NetPerformer offers superior data compression that minimizes the amount of bandwidth required on the satellite and therefore keeps costs relatively low. The end result is a cost effective solution that handles both voice and Internet traffic. It also transmits sonar data and other information gathered at the oil rig to an onshore location via Frame Relay. "NetPerformer has had excellent technology from the beginning, and it's still the easiest IP voice and data router to implement because it doesn't require additional hardware or external components," said Romero. "It's also one of the few to offer compressed calling over a dial-up modem connection, and our customers want that flexibility."
In a typical case, NetPerformer is replacing equipment from Vanguard. NetPerformer can be used to create a nearly endless variety of system configurations, while the Vanguard product is limited to two or three possibilities. According to Romero, NetPerformer is more scalable, and it's also more readily available, a critical factor for customers who expect quick turnaround on system installations. "We can get product delivery much faster from Memotec than from any other manufacturer," said Romero. "For us, that's often the difference between making a sale and losing one."
The Results
Network Products Leasing can lower its oil-rig customers' communications costs by a substantial margin. "The data compression technology that NetPerformer employs has helped to drive down the monthly cost of satellite bandwidth for a typical rig by well over 50% in the past decade," said Romero.
The company's customers have also, in effect, gained Web access bandwidth by eliminating unauthorized Internet usage with NetSpective. One major benefit of this for Network Products Leasing has been a sharp reduction in virus-related service calls. "Anytime we have to visit an offshore platform to remove a virus from a system, it's an expensive proposition," said Romero. "Since we began including NetSpective in our installations, we've seen the number of virus penetration attempts on our systems drop from as many as 75 a day to zero." Network Products Leasing has also discovered a new NetPerformer market opportunity with significant growth potential: providing "backhaul" services for remote cell sites through a process that streamlines and packetizes cellular traffic then connects it to a data channel that controls switching. The company can reduce a customer's cell phone expenses by as much as 40%.
Romero expects to see his company's revenue grow by 300% in the year ahead, with much of the increase coming from NetPerformer-based solutions. "It's a great product-flexible, scalable, reliable, easy to work with-and the service from Memotec has been excellent," he said. "It's technology you can grow on."

Satellite Connectivity Opens Up A Hot New African Market For A European Integrator And Operator
Sonema Creates A Memotec Netperformer-based Vsat Solution For Commercial Banks That Practically Sells Itself.
The Opportunity
Sonema is a Monaco-based telecommunications services provider that specializes in delivering fully integrated voice and data networking solutions to enterprise customers and carriers in developing nations. The company has nearly 300 installations in more than 30 countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, reflecting its commitment to bringing leading-edge communications technology to regions that have been underserved in the past. Sonema's solutions have been instrumental not only in establishing modern services in remote markets but also in spurring economic development in some of the world's most impoverished regions.
In 2001, Sonema executives learned from contacts at Western Union that many of Western Union's commercial bank customers in Africa were constrained in their efforts to expand their money transfer revenues by the poor quality of service provided by local carriers. Many of these banks' retail customers regularly send funds to relatives abroad, but the banks' ability to provide fast, reliable, and profitable execution of the transfers was often stymied by their dependence on expensive but unreliable dial-up connections to a local Point of Presence. It was not unusual for an African bank to experience a 90% call connection failure rate for international voice calls.
For connections to Western Union, the banks typically employed a dialup service provided by a service provider other than the incumbent carrier. The connection had to go through an incumbent carrier just to establish the local call to the POP. If a bank representative needed to speak with a Western Union agent to discuss an issue that could not be resolved over the dial-up data connection, the rep had to use the PSTN, making a costly long distance call that would often require several attempts before a connection could be established.
Recognizing an opportunity to expand their African customer base, Sonema representatives began to approach Western Union's bank customers with a solution already in mind.
Sonema has sold dozens of NetPerformer-based networks in Africa since 1999 and is "swamped" with orders from new customers.
The Solution
Sonema quickly realized it could offer a high-quality, NetPerformer-based VSAT solution to banks throughout Africa that would free the banks almost entirely from their dependence on local service.
Sonema was thoroughly familiar with the sophisticated capabilities and reliability of the NetPerformer product line from previous installations. "We've been working with NetPerformer-based solutions for years, and we have always been impressed with the technology and the support that backs it," said Yves Dollo, director of sales at Sonema.
NetPerformer combines the functionality of a data router, data compression, traffic shaping, and a voice gateway in a single device. Because it offers the highest possible quality of service algorithms for compressing voice and data traffic over a common WAN infrastructure, NetPerformer can optimize bandwidth utilization and reduce telephony costs by bypassing the PSTN on calls between disparate enterprise locations.
The solution offered to African banks by Sonema typically includes a NetPerformer hub at the bank's headquarters location, a NetPerformer unit at each bank branch, and remote VSAT stations interconnected, in some cases, by wireless WAN. The Memotec SkyPerformer option provides connectivity with satellite bandwidth leased by Sonema. Calls are linked via satellite to a hub in Monaco or directly from branch to branch. Sonema also established a leased line connection between Monaco and Paris that provides high-quality, low-cost voice and data transmission to Europe and beyond.
Results
Sonema's solution proved to be a relatively easy sell because of its obvious and immediate advantages for the banks. For approximately the same monthly cost of the local dial-up service to access Western Union, a typical bank could have voice and data connectivity with immediate response times. As a result, the bank could serve more than twice as many customers as before, increase its revenue from Western Union services, and nearly eliminate customer service complaints.
Sonema's African bank customers have also benefited from a substantial reduction in their local access charges as a result of the NetPerformer-based solution's toll bypass capabilities. Western Union has also cut its toll charges-an expense it shared with the banks-by installing a NetPerformer unit in its Paris hub.
In addition-and at no extra cost-bank branches acquired Internet connectivity and inter-branch voice and data networking, making possible a wide range of new communications and control applications that have boosted internal productivity. And because of NetPerformer's ease of installation and maintenance, the demands on Sonema's service and support group have been minimal. Most system troubleshooting can be handled remotely, and Memotec technicians are always available to Sonema and its customers for expert assistance.
SkyPerformer's SCPC satellite connection provides 100% dedicated bandwidth to each customer. Sonema has capitalized on this by creating an online service that enables each bank's support team to monitor their network utilization.
By lowering their total cost of ownership, the banks have typically achieved payback within six months while substantially increasing the quality of their customer service.
"NetPerformer provides excellent voice quality, it's highly reliable, and it's easy to operate and maintain," said Yves Dollo. "All of our banking customers have been happy with NetPerformer's performance and especially with the low total cost of ownership they experience because of their toll bypass savings and productivity improvements. The banks are also adding revenue and building customer loyalty with the service improvements they've been able to deliver in their local markets."
By early 2005, Sonema had sold and deployed dozens of NetPerformer-based VSAT networks throughout the African continent, with seven more planned for installation by the end of the year. Awareness of the solution's financial and operating benefits has spread rapidly throughout the African banking industry and into other sectors of African commerce as well. Sonema sees no shortage of future clients anxious to take advantage of the technology. According to Dollo, "We're swamped with orders from new customers."

Memotec NetPerformer® Provides Reliable, Cost-Effective Communications for Parker Drilling's Global Network of Offshore and Remote, Land-Based Oil Rigs.
The Opportunity
Parker Drilling Company has provided drilling services to the energy industry in every region of the world since its founding more than 70 years ago. The company operates 31 land-based drilling rigs in 13 countries from the U.S. to Papua New Guinea, and 25 offshore barge rigs in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, the Caspian Sea, Nigeria, and Mexico. Parker Drilling also provides rig management services, often to oil and gas companies that own rigs but prefer to outsource the operation of their drilling platforms. On these rigs, the company manages such critical functions as engineering, human resources, training, purchasing, logistics, and maintenance, as well as health, safety, and environmental programs.
Before the advent of IP telephony, the company relied on mostly radio (voice) communications to maintain contact with offshore drilling platforms and with land-based rigs in remote areas where traditional telephone service is not available. Radio communications via voice was an inefficient medium as it did not allow for transmitting geological and other data from the rigs to onshore base stations, from where it would be phoned, faxed, or sent via the Internet to Parker Drilling's Houston headquarters. In addition, radio offered no security for the transmission of such sensitive information as planned bids on future drilling contracts.
In 2001, the company decided to upgrade to satellite-based IP technology for voice and data transmissions to and from its offshore platforms and its land-based drilling rigs in isolated areas. The first step was to identify the solution that offered the best combination of quality, reliability, security, service, and cost-effectiveness.
The Solution
Charles Cox, Telecommunications Manager for Parker Drilling, knew what he was looking for from the outset. "Everybody in our industry was going to VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) satellite communications technology," said Cox. "The U.S. government had been using VSAT for years, and it offered the perfect solution for our offshore and remote locations. Our goal was to establish a more reliable, cost-effective, and robust communications link with our worldwide operation using VSAT as the vehicle. There's plenty of equipment on the market that will interface with VSAT, but satellite bandwidth is an expensive commodity, so we wanted to make sure we created a network with selected hardware that would be as efficient as possible."
After a thorough review of the available options, Parker Drilling's choice was the Memotec NetPerformer voice and data router with SkyPerformer®, a software option that enables NetPerformer to use a single satellite frequency to broadcast to multiple remote locations. "NetPerformer was the clear winner in our analysis because of its data compression performance," said Cox. "In addition, NetPerformer is extremely efficient in minimizing the amount of satellite bandwidth required to support a typical rig's voice and broadband Internet usage. On a typical offshore rig, they can use two voice calls, email, and Internet access simultaneously on just 100kHz (64Kbps). That translates directly into substantial cost savings while still providing the communications to meet safety and operational requirements. Further, the quality of voice transmissions is excellent despite the limited bandwidth."
Security was another critical decision criterion, according to Cox. Drilling companies submit bids for future contracts, and all transmissions that contain information about bids or any other confidential financial information have to be protected against electronic eavesdropping. In addition, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 raised the security stakes by requiring publicly held companies in the U.S. to ensure the confidentiality and control of sensitive financial data. "Voice security is now a big issue" said Cox. "Sarbanes-Oxley audit results are important to investors and, aside from that, we have to take steps that will deter anyone from gaining unauthorized access to our wireless communications. Fortunately, NetPerformer provides that extra bit of security that we need. Industrial espionage is alive and well in the energy business, so we must take the necessary steps to protect our network, whether it is voice or data. I take it as a compliment when a T-1 circuit provider tells me while troubleshooting a point-to-point landline with NetPerformers on each end that they're unable to tell if there is a good connection because their test equipment doesn't recognize the data."
The Results
Given the current cost of satellite bandwidth and the relatively less efficient data compression of competing routers, Parker Drilling is able to save several hundred dollars per month on each rig where NetPerformer has been installed. "When you multiply that by the number of our rigs that now rely on NetPerformer for their communications, it amounts to a substantial sum over time," said Cox. The company has saved even more by locating the VSAT server in its Houston office where it can easily be maintained by the existing IT staff.
Service has also been consistently up to par. "I have nothing but good things to say about the support Parker Drilling gets from Memotec. I could not ask for better," Cox said. "For our requirements, NetPerformer is simply the best solution on the market today."
