EDITORIAL: A DCME Opportunity?
|
By Semir Hassanaly, Sr. Director, Strategic Marketing |
The majority of mobile operators worldwide are deploying 3G and even 4G networks and services. While sufficient infrastructure is available in western countries, operators in developing countries have been taken off guard with the huge success of HSPA and are often faced with seemingly insurmountable situations and challenges. In many instances, the marketing department decides to launch new services and the network department is given less than a month to overcome horrible capacity bottlenecks. Solutions that involve revamping the network are usually very CAPEX intensive and are certainly not achievable within the time constraints. And, limited human resources added to a lack of equipment further complicate the issue. What to do?

The numbers speak for themselves – 3G products and services are rapidly becoming the defacto in broadband wireless networking. As of 2008, 3G subscribers worldwide account for 7% of the world’s users, and this growth is expected to rapidly accelerate as 3G networks continue to be deployed at a fast and furious pace. By 2013, 3G is expected to account for almost 20% of world subscribers, rising to 50% by 2017. And as early as 2012, mobile data traffic is expected to exceed voice traffic ¾ an adoption rate greater than that experienced by traditional 2G GSM services in the 1990s.
It may be too late for some but the question outlined here is one that mobile operators should still ask today, particularly as the majority of those new 3G subscribers will come from existing 2G customers - are media gateways needed for the migration to 3G?

DCME WHITE PAPER: Extending Mobile Infrastructure Investment Benefits - A Backhaul Solution
|
By Godfrey Chua, IDC |
Beginning in 2011 and beyond, IDC anticipates a further upside to the infrastructure opportunity as a result of LTE, the latest generation of wireless technologies currently commercializing. Mobile operators facing hyper competitive markets, ever-changing customer tastes, and fast-evolving technology must innovate, bring costs down and, given already significant investments made, leverage their networks as much as possible. A multitude of options and potential strategies from technology vendors are offered. One such approach gaining increasing market acceptance is dynamic bandwidth optimization and compression
