Digital GSM Abis Backhauling
The Right Alternative to Basic TDMMemotec's Radio Access Network (RAN) Optimizer cellular backhaul solution offers a simple yet compelling alternative to basic TDM Drop and Insert mechanisms for reducing RAN transmission costs. Our solution is based on bandwidth optimization, shared packet transport multiplexing, and network interface adaptation.
Get the Backhaul Flexibility of 3G RAN Networks – CX-UMemotec's platform features a unique packet gateway and bandwidth optimization solution designed for digital GSM Abis BTS to Base Station Controller (BSC) links. It gives 2G/2.5G cellular operators the backhaul flexibility of 3G RAN networks and allows them to achieve packet-based bandwidth efficiencies without compromising service integrity and voice quality. Memotec's GSM Abis optimizer solution is particularly suited when connecting BTSs or cluster of BTSs through expensive transmission facilities such as long distance leased lines or satellite links, where it can achieve up to 3:1 bandwidth reduction without any loss of voice quality.
A plug and Play Technology Agnostic Option – AbisXpressThe proprietary nature of the Abis interface and the related sensitivity of the different radios utilized have often delayed the field deployment of Optimization and Compression solutions thereby incurring revenue loss to Mobile Operators. The latter are also looking to an all-IP evolution path and do not want to make investments for a short term benefit. A Few Key Features
The minimal configuration of AbisXpress provides a unique plug-and-play deployment mode. As it operates on the transmission level, AbisXpress is independent of the Abis structure and protocol for ubiquitous total infrastructure vendor transparency. And without sacrificing anything on performance side, this new Memotec solution can be rapidly and easily deployed in ANY network. It operates in a connectionless environment, thus eliminating another layer of complexity of connection management. AbisXpress features superior optimization of resources for overall cost reduction.
Get More Revenues - Today
A quick and easy deployment will allow faster revenue generation and fewer constraints on the operations teams, optimization performance and integration with the operator’s network. Future-proof by design, it gets revenues flowing faster, lowers Opex and keeps Capex under tight control.
Converges and Aggregates all Services
Being able to converge and aggregate all new services & technologies into a single resource is key, as well as the ability to provide media adaptation to the different access transmission technologies available today and in the future.
*Existing Memotec customers already enjoying the benefits of actual Memotec GSM Abis optimization feature can also be upgraded to take advantage of the AbisXpress features. Simplify Network Operation and Reduce CostsScale your network along your traffic and service growthOperators need to be prepared for changes in network size, traffic types and technology changes. Memotec's RAN Optimizer solution is specificaly qualified for the job. Our platforms can be deployed quickly and transparently to the existing RAN transmission infrastructure, and then scaled with ease (without reconfiguring the network) to meet demand.
The Memotec platform is perfect for:
Aggregate Multiple Wireless ServicesDesigned to aggregate multiple wireless services types, our platformes efficiently carry the emerging IP-based services (WiFi, WiMAX, HSDPA), that will evolve as part of the 3G migration and broadband wireless convergence. Simple Configuration and Open ManagementIntuitive Provisioning and Maintenance OperationsMemotec's solution is easily deployed and configured using a centralized Graphical User Interface (GUI) Element Management System (EMS) that provides intuitive provisioning and maintenance operations. In order to further facilitate the turn-up of GSM access backhaul operations, Memotec's CX solution supports a "plug-&-play" auto-mapping feature, which automatically recognizes the traffic received by the Abis Interface card and provisions the unit with the required configuration data. Enhanced Network Operation and Service Quality
Memotec's CX RAN Optimizer features an essential added value to the Mobile Operator Network Operation Center (NOC): CXMON. CXMON is a built-in software probe that enables the operator to monitor precisely each Abis interface with real time graphic visualization of the different traffic being forwarded (signaling, voice, data). CXMON displays also real-time information on discarded frames and optimization ratio. As a result, CXMON allows the operator to control the quality of the service delivered over the RAN and fine tune the network efficiency for optimal cost effective utilization. Ater Link Backhaul OptimizationAggregate, Compress and OptimizeMemotec offers a complete solution for reducing the costs and/or increasing the capacity of voice and data trunks connecting BSCs to MSCs. Based on Memotec's CX gateway, Memotec's solution can aggregate, compress and optimize GSM 2G and 2.5G voice and data traffic at the A, A-ter and Gb/Gn interfaces. Up to 40% Ater Bandwidth SavingAt the Ater interface, Memotec's RAN Optimizer solution will reduce Ater bandwidth requirements by detecting and removing idle channels and silences in the voice traffic, offering up to 40% bandwidth savings per Ater link. The RAN Optimizer allows also a GSM operator to increase his Ater-link capacity by 50% transparently to the existing network transmission infrastructure, saving both on OPEX (recurring leasing costs) and CAPEX (additional equipments, network re-engineering and leasing upfront costs). 100% interoperability, transparencyMemotec's RAN Optimizer operates directly within the existing encoded Ater compressed voice channels and with minimal latency. Therefore, it guarantees 100% interoperability, transparency and no voice quality degradation. Memotec's solution is compatible with all the various GSM codecs currently available: FR, EFR, HR, AMR (FR and HR). In addition, the Memotec RAN Optimizer can also aggregate and compress SS7 signaling channels as well as GSM GPRS and EDGE data traffic at the Gb and Gn interface. After loss-less compression, the signaling and data traffic is multiplexed together with the Ater voice traffic on the same transport network infrastructure (Digital TDM, ATM or packet based), further increasing the overall BSC backhaul traffic bandwidth reduction, and cost savings. EDGEPlus: Expanding GSM ServicesThe Memotec CX Series offer GSM Cellular Operator a solution for deploying EDGE services on their existing RAN infrastructure, without changing the current network configuration or increasing their OPEX. As such, it enables the GSM cellular Operator to benefit from the additional potential revenue of high value, high-speed data users, while reducing the financial exposure associated with deploying a new service. Reduce Your Backhaul CostsMore than 30% immediate reduction on transmission costs Enhanced voice quality, Increased Customer Satisfaction Compelling business cases for Rural and Remote cellular communications
Make Rural And Remote Cellular Communications AffordableCellular communications in rural and remote areas can be difficult to justify economically: the cost of deploying equipment is high and the return on investment might be questionable. Although government initiatives encourage and may finance these deployments, it is important to make those communications affordable to reach out effectively to the whole population.
Voice service is the most essential need in these regions and a significant portion of these voice calls may take place between villages. While standard cellular infrastructures would backhaul the voice circuits further up in the network, the Memotec local switching feature allows these calls between villages covered by the same BTS (or BTS clusters) to be routed locally, avoiding the costs related to the upstream path. It is now easier for Mobile Operators to offer unlimited local call plans and increase their revenue thereby.
Local Switching also allows to avoid double-hop, enhancing voice quality and reducing delays, driving up customer satisfaction. Combined with the Memotec Abis Optimization, the solution provides exceptional Low cost of operation to Mobile Operators.

Benefits
The technology behind Memotec's Local Switching FunctionThe Memotec Local Switching function significantly reduces the amount of bandwidth required to backhaul voice traffic.
During a voice communication between two mobiles phones attached to the same BTS (or group of BTS), only the signalling is backhauled while the speech information is routed locally. At the interface with the BSC, silent speech frames are generated and transmitted together with the signalling to maintain full inter-working with the GSM network. Billing and other functionalities are therefore not disturbed.
Detection of local calls is performed by the Local Switching Call Server Manager who commands the Memotec CX-U deployed at BTS and BSC levels. The CX-Us will then loop the calls and leave the signaling portions untouched.
Local Switching is available with all major BSS systems (BTS/BSC) using TDM interface and works equally with TDM or IP transmission systems. It is compliant to GSM supplementary services while GPRS data is supported seamlessly.
